Recent Oil Paintings

I’ve recently taken up oil painting in hopes that it would help improve my ability to perceive and apply color. I do a lot of painting on the computer, but in Photoshop I have the luxury of the eyedropper tool and infinite paint-overs. With oil painting, I have to mix every single color by hand, and after I apply a color, it’s time-consuming to wipe it off and correct it. I’m hoping oil painting will force me to start choosing the right color the first time, every time.

My goal here isn’t to make an artistic statement, or even something anyone would want to hang on a wall. I just want to practice using color and shape with reasonably interesting imagery.

Here are my first paintings that have turned out reasonably decent:

Still Life of Egg and Glass
24” x 18”
Oil on Canvas Board

Eve
18” x 24”
Oil on Canvas Board

Peppers
24 x 12
Oil on Board

For those of you who are into the technical side of painting, here’s my palette for these three paintings. I suppose you could call it a simplified split primary. I’ve changed this up for the paintings I’ve done recently, but I’ll discuss that in another post.

Titanium White
Pthalo Blue
Ultramarine
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Red Light
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Yellow Light
